Rain will once again hit parts of Southern California on Saturday, Oct. 15 – and could bring some lightning and hail with it –  as a low-pressure system makes its way east across the region, forecasters say.

The storm is expected to begin over the ocean overnight and spread inland, with the chance of small hail, cloud-to-ground lightning and gusty winds, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Rich Thompson.

Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties can all expect to see pockets of rain beginning in the early morning and continuing through the evening. Most of the rain will come Saturday afternoon.

“A low-pressure system off the coastal waters is moving inland and bringing in another shot of moisture that will touch down late (Friday) and continue through Saturday,” Thompson said. “There will be plenty of chance for showers and thunderstorms.”

But the rain won’t amount to more than about a half inch, he said.

The system was moving quickly and should head east out of the region by Sunday.

But forecasters said there could be minor flooding, with rain falling at a rate of a half-inch per hour, although the rate could vary dramatically in isolated areas.

“This will bring the potential for roadway flooding and minor debris flows in the recent burn scars of L.A. County,” the NWS said. “These thunderstorms will also have the potential for producing downdraft wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph with abrupt and erratic wind shifts.”

In San Bernardino County, an evacuation warning was in effect beginning Friday night, with officials concerned about possible mud and debris flow from the El Dorado and Apple fire burn scars.

The rain will usher in warmer weather across Southern California next week, forecasters said.

There will still be a chance of some additional rainfall, but by Wednesday, temperatures are expected to rise into the 70s along the coast, and into the 80s inland.
