LOS ANGELES — DeMario Jackson, whose behavior on the "Bachelor" franchise led to a misconduct investigation, has been accused of raping two women.

On Tuesday, two Jane Does filed a complaint against Jackson in Los Angeles County Superior Court alleging that Jackson sexually assaulted them. In the legal document, both women claim that they separately went on dates with Jackson that ended with him forcing them into nonconsensual sex.

Two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge has bettered his own world record in the Berlin Marathon. The Kenyan runner clocked 2:01:09 to shave 30 seconds off his previous best-mark of 2:01:39 set at the same course in 2018. Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa unexpectedly won the women’s race in a course record of 2:15:37 – 18 minutes faster than she had ever run before. It was the third fastest time ever. Conditions in the German capital were ideal for fast racing. Some 45,527 runners from 157 nations were registered to take part in the first Berlin Marathon without restrictions since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Pope Francis has traveled to southern Italy to close out an Italian church congress that coincided with Italy’s national election. Neither Francis nor his hosts referred to the vote during the open-air Mass, though Francis mentioned immigration and Italy's low birth rate in comments afterward, hitting on two campaign issues. Italy’s bishops conference had earlier urged Italians to cast ballots in the eagerly watched election that could bring Italy its first far-right government since World War II.

California voters will decide in November whether to uphold or block a law Gov. Gavin Newsom signed in 2020 that banned the sale of certain flavored tobacco products, an effort by anti-tobacco advocates to stop a youth vaping crisis and weaken the industry's influence in the state.

LOS ANGELES — When the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority this month published a spreadsheet breaking down its homeless count by every census tract in the county, those with knowledge of Venice were incredulous.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez says he has tested positive for COVID-19. The leader of Spain’s Socialist party and of the country’s coalition government said in a Twitter post Sunday that he was canceling his appearance at a Socialist event marking the beginning of the new political season after the summer recess. Sánchez did not say whether he was feeling ill or whether he would cancel other engagements next week. He said: “I will keep working, taking all precautions.” Sánchez last week attended the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He returned to Spain for an official event on Friday.

Israeli soldiers have shot and killed a suspected Palestinian gunman during an arrest raid overnight in the northern West Bank. The army says it fired at a group of armed men early Sunday near the city of Nablus. The Den of Lions,  a local militant group, confirms one of its members said one of its members was was killed in a “clash with the occupation forces.” Israel has been conducting nightly arrest raids in the northern West Bank since a series of deadly Palestinian attacks inside Israel last spring. Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in the violence, making it the deadliest year in the occupied territory since 2016.

MIAMI (AP) — In Miami, restaurants come and restaurants go, but food halls remain.

Jordan Addison caught a go-ahead 21-yard touchdown pass with 1:13 left and No. 7 USC overcame a shaky performance for a 17-14 victory against Oregon State. The Beavers, vying to start 4-0 for the first time since 2012, took the lead on Jam Griffin’s 18-yard touchdown run with 4:41 remaining. But USC quarterback Caleb Williams led an 11-play, 84-yard drive that ended with Addison’s sixth touchdown catch of the season.

Dave Caulkin, a retired Associated Press photographer who captured the iconic moment when ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the 1984 Olympic gold medal, has died. He was 77. Known for being in the right place at the right time with the right lens, the London-based Caulkin covered everything from the conflict in Northern Ireland to the Rolling Stones and Britain’s royal family during a career that spanned four decades. One of his most renowned images was that of Torvill and Dean, their lips inches apart as if poised for a kiss, as they skated to Ravel’s “Bolero.”

For decades, millions of Egyptians have depended on the government to keep basic goods affordable. But a series of shocks to the global economy and Russia's invasion of Ukraine have endangered the social contract in the Middle East's most populous country, which is also the world's biggest importer of wheat. Michigan State blew up the market for college football coaches last season by giving Mel Tucker a massive 10-year contract as the Spartans charged out to a 9-1 start in his second campaign. It was a bit puzzling at the time. After the Spartans were run over for the second straight week to fall to 4-3 in their last seven games, the 10-year megadeal is looking even more questionable. The coach-as-savior mentality is rampant in college football and it is causing desperate schools to make costly decisions, fraught with risk.

A powerful typhoon has shifted and strengthened in an “explosive intensification” as it approached the northeastern Philippines. The storm might sideswipe the capital, Manila. Authorities have begun evacuating people Sunday from high-risk villages and bracing for potential disaster. Government forecasters said Typhoon Noru was swirling at sea about 110 miles east of Infanta town on the east coast, with sustained winds of 121 miles per hour and gusts of up to 149 mph at midday. It was forecast to smash into the coast later Sunday. Thousands of villagers were evacuated from the typhoon’s path and nearby villages prone to landslides, floods and tidal surges as high as 10 feet in Quezon province and nearby Aurora province.

Graham Nicholson kicked a tiebreaking 36-yard field goal with 21 seconds left in regulation, and Miami (Ohio) rallied late to stun Northwestern 17-14. It was the RedHawks’ first win against against a Big Ten team since it beat Northwestern 44-14 in 2003. Miami went 13-1 that year and was ranked No. 10 in the final AP poll with Ben Roethlisberger leading the way. Nicholson had hit the upright on a previous field goal attempt and had another blocked. His game-winner capped a 13-play, 58-yard drive. It was Northwestern’s third straight loss and second shocker at home, following a 31-24 loss to Southern Illinois last week.

Italians are voting in a national election coming at a critical time for Europe. Soaring energy bills, largely caused by the war in Ukraine, have households and businesses fearful they can't keep the heat or lights on this winter. Sunday’s balloting for Italy’s Parliament might yield the nation’s first government led by the far-right since the end of World War II. Opinion polls had indicated Giorgia Meloni and her Brothers of Italy party, with its neo-fascist roots, would be the top vote-getter. Polls opened at 7 a.m. (0500GMT). The counting of paper ballots was expected to begin shortly after they close at 11 p.m. (2100 GMT), with projections based on partial results coming early Monday morning.

Authorities and residents in Florida are keeping a cautious eye on Tropical Storm Ian as it rumbles through the Caribbean, expected to continue gaining strength and become a major hurricane in the coming days on a forecast track toward the state. Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a statewide emergency, expanding an order from Friday that had covered two dozen counties. He is urging Floridians to prepare for a storm that could lash large swaths of the state. Some residents have begun stocking up on supplies such as water, plywood and generators. President Joe Biden has also declared an emergency for the state.

Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez ran for 148 yards and four touchdowns, and the Wildcats stunned No. 6 Oklahoma 41-34. Martinez also passed for 234 yards and a score and Deuce Vaughn rushed for 116 yards for the Wildcats. It was Brent Venables' first loss as a head coach, and it came against his alma mater. Kansas State also beat Oklahoma in 2012, 2014, 2019 and 2020. Dillon Gabriel passed for 330 yards and four touchdowns and Eric Gray ran for 114 yards for the Sooners.

Yu Darvish settled in after surrendering a leadoff homer to earn his career-high-tying 16th win and the San Diego Padres climbed into second place in the NL wild-card race by beating the Colorado Rockies 9-3. Jake Cronenworth and Ha-Seong Kim each had two-run singles as part of a six-run seventh that turned a 3-2 game into a rout. The Padres moved a half-game ahead of Philadelphia. Darvish struck out eight over six efficient innings to match his win total he set as a rookie with Texas in 2012. The reigning NL player of the week saw his stretch of 16 straight scoreless innings come to an end on his fourth pitch of the game, when Ryan McMahon lined a split-finger over the fence in right.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — In a small village about an hour drive from Nairobi, Kenya, a mother pretends to begin preparations for dinner and prays for her children to fall asleep early before noticing they had no food.

Cade Stover and Emeka Egbuka each caught two of C.J. Stroud’s five touchdown passes, Miyan Williams rushed for two more scores and No. 3 Ohio State blew by Wisconsin 52-21. The Buckeyes scored touchdowns on their first four drives and led 31-7 at the half. Wisconsin could only slow them down after that but couldn’t any get closer than 21 points.
